The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
