The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
